Hubert Lignier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022The Lignier family owns a mere tenth of a hectare in the Mazoyeres Haut climat of this Gevrey Chambertin grand cru. From their old vines (planted in 1948), they render a wine of immense power and concentration, yet always with a sense of underlying refinement, and a mineral core of incredible depth. The wine has all but swallowed its 30% new wood even at this youthful stage.

The cru Pipparello is situated at 400 meters altitude with soils of gravel and clay

with the other 20% a combination of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon

planted 80% to Cabernet Franc and 20% to Merlot

and subtle notes of pastry

Arguably the most well-rounded Volnay in the domaine’s lineup

The site’s particular terroir—a few inches of pebble-strewn topsoil above solid limestone rock—yields a wine of unfathomable mineral intensity

before resting for 43 months in large oak barrels

including the rare Wadenzwil strain) to show through

the historical basis for the terroir of this specific and special zone of Brunello

and after 6–9 months in inox

and aged in steel for 18 months
